Neandertals and the thyroid gland: The selenium connection "Goiter has been produced
in animals by feeding them fluoride salts. This element in man exerts an
antithyroid effect when used in the treatment of thyrotoxicosis (Goldemberg
1930). Such relationships probably account for the famous "Derbyshire neck,"
an enlargement of the thyroid gland that looks like a swollen neck, formerly
found in inhabitants of fluorite (calcium fluoride) areas in central England
(Hetzel 1989). Indeed, it has been argued that, in China, goiter is promoted
by elevated levels of four elements that adversely influence the thyroid:
calcium, magnesium, fluorine, and lithium (Tan 1989)."
